Architect – Project Runner (Retail Sector)
Location: London, EC1 (a short walk from Old Street Station)
Salary: £45,000 to £50,000 per annum (depending on experience)
A dynamic and expanding architectural practice based in London is seeking a talented, driven, and career-focused Architect to join its team. About the Role
The successful candidate will join the practice’s specialist retail team, working under the mentorship and guidance of an experienced Associate Director. The Architect will be entrusted with a high level of autonomy and responsibility, overseeing projects from inception through to completion. They will lead internal teams and coordinate external consultants to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest standard—aligned with both client expectations and the practice’s design ethos.
As a client-facing role, the position requires a confident communicator who is comfortable engaging with stakeholders, presenting design proposals, and managing expectations across all RIBA work stages. The role also involves contributing to the ongoing evolution of studio culture and processes, including mentoring junior team members and promoting technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Leading the day-to-day management of multiple retail projects, ensuring effective design and technical coordination across all RIBA stages
Acting as the main point of contact for clients, contractors, and consultants, and representing the practice professionally
Adopting a proactive approach to problem-solving during design development and construction stages
Preparing, reviewing, and managing detailed technical documentation, including planning submissions, tender packages, and construction drawings
Ensuring compliance with all relevant UK legislation, including Building Regulations, CDM requirements, and the Building Safety Act
Upholding high standards in Revit and BIM across project teams
Regularly reporting on project status, risks, and opportunities to senior leadership
Supporting the development of junior colleagues through informal leadership, training, and mentorship
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
ARB-registered Architect or experienced Architectural Technologist with strong technical delivery capabilities
Proven experience delivering projects across all RIBA stages, within the retail or commercial sectors
In-depth understanding of UK building regulations, planning policy, and CDM responsibilities
Demonstrated ability to prepare fully coordinated planning, tender, and construction packages
Proficient in Revit, with a strong understanding of BIM-led workflows
Excellent leadership and coordination skills, including experience managing multidisciplinary consultant teams
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with confidence in leading meetings and engaging with clients
Capable of independently managing multiple workstreams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Must have the right to work in the UK (VISA sponsorship is not available)
Desirable:
Experience working on retail roll-out programmes or to strict client brand guidelines
Familiarity with low-carbon design approaches and sustainability frameworks
Experience with site inspections and administering contracts under JCT or similar forms
